Recordstore Day 2011: Dense the crisis away.

April 16th, 2011 No comments

As some most of you will know, today (April 16th) is record store day, a.k.a. the only day in the year where people like us can bash you on the head about commercialism without feeling bad. In other words, if you don’t want something like this to happen, please support your local beat dealers.

And though we are still recovering from yesterday’s 8th Densehall party, we have two great reasons for you to come and show up at Dense today:

1. Kohvi Radio DJs Estrada and Snafu will spin a fine selection of records at the store, together with lo-fi punktronic hero Pastacas. That’s for free, that’s at Dense today, and it starts at 6M. The sun is shining, the music will be good, and the beers are cold.

2. On top of that, we’re partnering with  our friends of Equinoxe records to offer  exclusively today a limited quantity of the “Das Abstrakt EP” fron Deckard, a very fine record of downbeat abstract hip-hop, originally self-produced in 2004 and available right now at Dense. Quantities are limited: first come, first served.

All right, what you are waiting for? See you at the store later today.

Friday, April 15th:  the new DENSEHALL!

at

CHEZ JACKI (next to Club Maria / entrance from the riverside)

It’s the eighth installement already of the infamous Densehall night! This time with an even more eclectic and amazing line-up than ever before!

Andrew Pekler, famous for his incredible deepness, will celebrate the WORLD-PREMIERE of his new audio-visual live show. He hasn’t played in Berlin for years and don’t expect this to happen any time soon again. Pastacas will bring their unique… blend of eastern-european folk, hip hop and smart electronica, all in a band constellation. Bill Youngman comes with his side-project Audible, which is rather a mixture of electro and bass music of the last years, than the state-of-the-art techno you would expect from him. Dustin Giegling is the man behind our favorite house label, so expect some soulful funk and kickdrums for your dancing pleasure… Florian Sievers is a man you can call an archeologist. He traveled all across East- and South-Africa, going through archives, collections and even dumps to find rare cuts of African music, gathering an unique insight in a very vivid, fascinating and basically unknown record culture. He will also hold a lecture on the African club culture within the “Techno und elektronische Musikkulturen global und lokal” seminar at the “Archive of Youth Cultures” earlier this day: http://bit.ly/dSoFjh

The night is supported by the KOHVIRADIO dj-team, longtime friends of us from Tartu, Estonia.

The night starts early, 10pm, due to the concerts!

This day was a clear blue sky day and I was strolling through my local park, Regents Park, and came across a flower which looked like a Daisy, though I’m not sure if it was, but anyway I came across this flower and it seemed to stand out from the rest on a patch of grass that was ever so green. I interpreted this image as a sign of individuality, an outcast in society; but a product of its own. Amongst repeated action there stands this autonomous soul who chooses not to follow others but instead remain outside the crowd yet still somehow within it… The green grass represented the sign of greatness to come and on this clear blue sky day the name was born; Blue Daisy, a representative of individuality. And that’s what I look to represent with my music”.

Thursday, March 10th, 15:00h: BODUF SONGS & DJ KNIVE (aka Svarte Greiner)

March 6th, 2011 No comments

After a long series of electronic in-store gigs, we have a very fine and special treat for you: A concert by one of our favourite folk musicians, Boduf Songs! This time its an early lazy afternoon show… So make sure to bring some buscuits, we’ll serve the tea!

BODUF SONGS will be supported this afternoon by DJ KNIVE aka Erik K. Skodvin, also known for his solo releases on Type Records, Digitalis, Sonic Pieces and Ghostly (as Sv…arte Greiner or as one half of Deaf Center) and his incredible label Miasmah Records. He will play one of his rare dj-sets to make sure, that you are well entertained and in good spirits!

Boduf Songs is the name taken by Mat Sweet, who lives in Southampton England. His music reminds the listener of a sunny English afternoon, with an ominous tinge of approaching clouds. Sweet’s collaged album art, taken from Victorian books, lends a surreal air to his music. While his first albums were just about him, one microphone and his music, the latest Boduf Songs album was created using Sweet’s standard recording set up of a single microphone and a small array of instruments, but comes with a few surprises – most notably the prominence of electric guitar, bass and stomping drums on a few tracks. All of the elements that make his previous sound creations so arresting are still present; the impeccable song structures, the minimal approach, the delicate yet dominant singing. The album opens with the naked sound of the hammers of an old upright piano striking strings, an apt metaphor for the lyrical content which is just as raw and exposed.

Instore Show with BILL YOUNGMAN + BARKER (aka Voltek)

February 19th, 2011 1 comment

19.2.2011
DENSE INSTORE GIG
- free entrance -
19h-22h

BILL YOUNGMAN (killekill) – live
BARKER aka Voltek (ostgut, leisure system)

A little show off we have next saturday: BILL YOUNGMAN playing live!
BILL YOUNGMAN is known mostly for his wonky techno productions that he released during the last 15 years on renowned labels like Neil Landstrumm’s Scandinavia Records or Tresor.
But he also has a big passion for electronica, IDM and electro as you could tell from his beautiful album “Low Lifestyle” that he released on DC recordings in 2002 under the alias AUDIBLE.
Recently BILL is getting more and more bored by being categorized into one single musical category and gets back to what he’s really good at: making music.
So he came out on Warp recently with a really freaky remix for Jamie Lidell and produced an asskicking single that will be out on Killekill records soon.
Have a beer to him playing some of his softer stuff live at the DENSE store!

Also there for you that night is BARKER, known to many of you by his alias VOLTEK, who holds a residency at the legendary LEISURE SYSTEM nights at Berghain.
His coproduction with ND BAUMECKER has recently been released on OSTGUT TON, and there is more of his idmraveelectronicatechnodubstepelectro stuff to come out as BARKER solo on KID 606′s label and the label the Leisure System guys will start themselves very soon.

Good combination. See ya!
