Dense on Arte.

March 5th, 2010

Arte recently shot an interview with the british author John Niven during the promotion tour for his new book, and asked him about his favorite records. The whole thing took place at Dense, and here’s the result. Great accent, nice music selection and, of course, an even better record shop:

2010 is go! (and important information below)

January 12th, 2010

First Dense newsletter for 2010, and starting the year with rather problematic news. Our computer has decided to play tricks on us (probably feeling let down that we never use it to play mp3, and jealous of our turntables), and has decided to dismember, disassemble and discard our customer order files. As a result, all of our specific orders have been lost. Therefore, if you have ordered something from us in the last couple of months, please get in touch. Your records might be waiting for you here, but we just don’t know anymore who ordered what. Yeaah for 2010.

All’s not so grim at the beginning of this new year, though, as we’ve got a lot of good beats, bits and blips for everybody.

The lion’s share goes to the breaks and dubstep section, with some jewels such as the new Millie & Andrea record (as usual pretty limited and sure to be gone pretty soon), Untold’s new “Flexible” or three new records by Pinch, Joker and Distance on Tectonic. And I can’t but mention a CD which has brought a pretty wide consensus among us, the new Lone album on Werk Discs, “Ecstasy & Friends”.

More home-listening oriented? Check out some excellent new material by Simon Scott on Miasmah (a label we have been pushing for some time now), or the new album by Peter Broderick and Machinefabriek on Fanbomb.

A bit of product placement to close this newsletter: two of the labels closely affiliated with Dense have brought up some fresh sounds for this new year. Karaoke Kalk starts the decade with “Paper of Pins” by Wells, Schneider, Whitehead and Morgenstern, while Ad Noiseam’s alarm clock comes in the form of “The Words Below Limited Vinyl Edition vol. 3″ by DJ Hidden (the other two volumes and the album are of course still available).

Here’s the list. Enjoy, and again, please get in touch if you have placed any order through Dense in the last couple of months.

Densing on the Kilimanjaro

December 8th, 2009

tkde-band_banner

Yes, unbelievable but true: one week after its unannounced resurection, the Dense newsletter is already back with a vengeance. How far will it go?

Before we beging: do not miss the show by The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble this very Thursday (Dec 10th) at Maria Am Ostbahnhof.
Not only is TKDE an amazing band released on Ad Noiseam (a label closely associated with Dense), playing their first gig ever in Berlin, but the supporting acts are Dense-favorite Lambent (who has also released on this other Dense-related label that is Stillavailable) and Oktopus of the ever impressive Dälek, but the whole thing is co-organized by your humble servants and the Club Transmediale. Add to this that entrance costs only 10 Euro and that the shows are quite early (be there before 10 PM at any rate), and you get something that nobody has the right to miss. Beware, we know who you are and will take retaliatory measures on those of you not attending.

Then, the new sounds for this week are a bit less electronic than usual. Let’s kick in with the new album by Curse Ov Dialect on Staubgold for some quality hip hop, and mention that we are also stocking a lot of releases by the Projet Mooncircle label, also in the hip hop aisle.
A lot less hip hop and a lot more evil, don’t pass on the live CD / LP / DVD by Wolves In The Throne Room (available in all formats), or the Kodiak and Nadja split LP on Denovali.
The rare amongst us who not only have ears but also eyes will enjoy the new issues of De:Bug and of the spanish luxury design magazine Belio, both of which are in stock now.

Finally, note that we’re making your Christmas shopping a bit easier this year, by re-stocking a lot of classics (such as a big chunk of the Warp backcatalog for very nice, friendly prices). The time has come to help your friends and significant others discover the albums that changed your listening habits some years ago.

Here is the list, and remember, we’ll see each other this Thursday at Maria Am Ostbahnhof. Be there and be dense.

Euer Dense Records Shop.

“They already sounded like today’s hipsters Flying Lotus and Samiyam at the end of the nineties.” (Generation Bass)

BEX

+ records and merchandise: (T)reue um (T)reue & Night On Earth Records

Can there be a more beautiful place to get over the national holiday weekend than a vacant Berlin factory hall? A place that is recaptured by counterculture every now and then for concert experiments and sound installations.
In October’s early dawning a pan-european brigade of second hand vanguards, deep drone operators and psychedelic post-industrialists will gather in exactly that kind of place to celebrate a double night orgy in order to paint the eschaton deserts of our everyday lives in brand new colours.

GROUPSHOW

http://www.myspace.com/thegroupshow

GROUPSHOW is a project by three producers of electronic music based in Berlin: Jan Jelinek, Andrew Pekler and Hanno Leichtmann.
The three artists, steeped in the formal language of minimalism, engage in a boundary-free collective improvisation that has its ancestors in both Fluxus and Krautrock. GROUPSHOW performances do not recreate previously rehearsed or recorded music. Instead, they attempt to make an open-ended aesthetic process both audible and tangible.
The pursuit of these aims has several practical consequences. Wherever possible, GROUPSHOW position themselves and their equipment in the middle of the performance space, avoiding the use of a stage, risers or any kind of spatial separation between performer and audience. The lighting remains static and clinical throughout the performance while real-time video, filming from directly above the musicians and projected onto a wall or screen, shows the three members playing and manipulating their tangled pile of equipment.
Whenever possible, GROUPSHOW begin playing before any audience members enter, thus deliberately avoiding the dramaturgical imperative of an opening from which the rest of the musical narrative is expected to unfold. As the intensity of the music and degree of the audience’s attention are both subject to flux, GROUPSHOW set no time limit to their performances and members of the audience are free to come and go, engage and disengage with the music as they please.
