New in-store gig with Karsten Pflum and Puzzle

July 14th, 2010 Nicolas 1 comment

Dense braves the summer heat to bring you a new installment of their free instore gig, this very Saturday at 8PM.

Performing for us all will be Denmark’s Karsten Pflum, a name with which anybody interested in bass-heavy, intelligent electronic music should be familiar with (and if you’re not, here’s another reason to come and correct this mistake). With a new record out now on Ad Noiseam (and of course available at Dense), Karsten Pflum is in the spotlight and an act not to miss.

Completing the evening will be our good friend Puzzle(weasel), who has been performing at quite a few Dense-related events in the last couple of years. From fast IDM to energetic dubstep to wonky melodies, Puzzle is known for the efficiency of his material live.

The music will be great, the entrance is for free, the drinks will be cold, and you are all invited. We start at 8PM sharp, so don’t be late and see you this Saturday.

Illum Sphere, Puzzle & more at Dense on Saturday May 22nd

May 19th, 2010 Nicolas No comments

Don’t let the grey skies fool you: Dense is alive, well and throwing a new instore gig, no later than this Saturday. This time, we’ve assembled a line-up of no less than four new talents which will play some very up-to-date and exciting beats at the Dense store.

at Dense Record Shop
Saturday, May 21nd:

Illum Sphere (3024 / Fat City)
Puzzle (Tigerbeat6 / Contortion)
Silverman (One4ho / Semantica)
Paul Spymania (Spymania)

Music starts at 7PM sharp, free entrance.

Dense is happy to present an in-store gig by Illum Sphere, a fast rising british producer whose mixture of dubstep, hip hop and techno is getting quite a lot of recognition at the moment. You’ll hear from this guy again, but don’t miss this intimate first show at Dense.
Playing right before him will be the Danish-export Puzzle, whose wonky dubstep beats are tastier than Carlsberg, as demonstrated on several occasions at various gigs in Berlin.
Opening the ball will be the equally young and productive Paul Spymania and Silverman, active in the same audio territories, somewhere at the meeting points of dubstep, hip hop and all other kinds of electronica.

So remember to stop by the store, enjoy the gigs, check out some new records. See you on Saturday.

It stands for “Dense Dense Dense”.

April 1st, 2010 Nicolas No comments

Ah spring feelings: we’ve definitely awoken from our winter lethargy and are getting better with our newsletter, as you might (and should) have noticed by now.

Before we begin, note that we will host a third in-store gig for the year this Saturday (yes, in about 48 hours) at the store:

ED FLIS (DURAN DURAN DURAN)
ANTON MAIOF
free in-store gig at Dense
Saturday, April 3rd, 7:30PM

We hope to see you there, as this will be the first collaboration between these two Berlin-based musician, as well as the first show at Dense for our good friend of DDD.

Let’s talk of records now: we’ve got a lot of new indietronica from German labels: new Dub Tractor CD and LP on City Centre, new Ember CD on Ahornfelder (from whom we’ve received a lot of backstock as well), various Seabear releases from Morr Music; there’s definitely some pretty cute tunes in the air for everybody here. This also applies to Shitkatapult’s first relesae of the year, the debut album by Notic Nastic, “It’s Dark But It’s Okay”.

What about dubstepy, you ask? How about a heavy 12″ by Matta on Ad Noiseam, a few Untold releases on his Hemlock imprint, the new Scuba album on Hotflush or the new “Cloud Seed” double LP by Vex’d on Planet Mu.

Before leaving the electronic aisle: yes, we do have the limited (and luxurious) vinyl edition of Autechre‘s new “Oversteps” album as well as the new Gonjasufi album, also on Warp.

Less keyboards and more strings: the guitar section now features a new album by Sunburned Hand Of The Man on Ecstatic Peace, Efterklang‘s new CD and LP on 4AD or a first split 12″ by our friend of Golden Disko Ship on Monika.

Here’s the list. We’re closed tomorrow (Friday) and on Easter Monday, but feel free to stop by the store on Saturday, both for these new records and the in-store gig.

1ist class in-store gigs at Dense (bringing the noise back)

March 17th, 2010 Nicolas No comments

The free instore gigs at Dense are back, with no less than two of them happening in the coming weeks. Therefore, consider yourself invited to:

2ECOND CLASS CITIZEN
Friday, March 19th
7:30PM

and

HOLZOPF & PETER QUISTGARD
Tuesday, March 23rd
6:30PM

Both gigs are free and are taking place at the Dense records store, Petersburger Str 81 in Friedrichshain.

We’ll start the season with a rare live performance by 2econd Class Citizen, one of the main acts on the Equinox label, who will grace Berlin with this unique gig while on tour throughout Europe. Come and enjoy his delicate yet strong mixture of alternative hip hop and folk sensibilities this Friday at the store (yes, that’s in 48 hours).

A few days later on Tuesday, Canadian veteran experimentalist Holzkopf and his Dutch partner in crime Peter Quistgard will unleash some 8 bit, noisy and broken madness onto the store. It might be raw, it might be tongue-in-cheek but one thing is for sure: it will fit perfectly at Dense.

Remember, these are early gigs, and we will start on time. See you there for some live densing.

URBAN WITCHES NOT BITCHES VERNISSAGE

life performances with:

Fake Mistress
Legs Akimbo
Lucy A. Roberts
Rubbish Fairy

Separated from the power giving source of nature and the wilderness, urban witches use the cityscape as a new primordial forest- a place filled with dangers but also a source of abundant sustenance if they live in harmony with the city and honor it. As a result, the latent power of the city is evoked and an Urban Witch is able to find power in simple man made objects as nature’s energy can be discovered in anything that was created. Urban Witches are in touch with the inherent synchronistic flow of the city which they can ride on just like the U Bahn if they keep their third eyes open. An Urban Witches basic mantra is “TUNE INTO SYNCHRONICITY AND THE CITY WILL ALWAYS PROVIDE.” Urban Witches therefore communicate with the guardians of the city- the Neon Divas and Electric Gods like streetlights and vending machines. Their temples are high rise buildings and dance clubs, they can recognize and interpret the modern signals of graffiti. Urban Witches not Bitches is a gathering of Urban Witches featuring the Altars of the Urban Witches: Rubbish Fairy (London), Legs Akimbo (Team Plastique, Berlin) and Lucy A.Roberts (Berlin). Made synchronistically from found and recycled objects, these Urban Witch altars present how women in the city can create an alternative world outside of the competitive bitch culture “girl power” presented by the mass media with groups like “The Pussycat Dolls”. Urban Witches not Bitches are also very unique- they do not follow a prescribed New Age or Wicca spirituality but instead find power by discovering and expressing their positive, strong and amazing individual natures. Urban Witches not Bitches invite Urban Peeps to visit their Urban Witch Altars in the hope that Urban Peeps can also reconnect with their inner minds and seek alternative astral planes.

SOMMERLAGER VS SOMMERLOCH presents. ZIZEK CLUB

TROPICALLL!!!!
With its African, indigenous Indian and colonial roots in Colombia, Cumbia music has suddenly been catapulted into a new era. In the same way that Kuduro, Kwaito, Baile funk, Reggaeton are intertwined with Dancehall, Hip Hop, Crunk, Dubstep and Techno, Cumbia is now also part of the endless list of genres that have surfaced as urban, electronic and world music are mashed together by the club kids of today.
DJs, producers, and bloggers worldwide who are united by the internet and an insatiable hunger for subculture, bass and uncharted musical territory have been embracing Cumbia and its sexy, bassy riddims.
Following in the footsteps of labels such as Diplo’s MadDecent or Man Recordings in Berlin, Zizek Records reflects a movement where the cross-cultural chaos is the motto and in fact a genre for itself!
The Argentina based label Zizek Records was born out of a regular club night in Buenos Aires called Club Zizek, where local djs have played alongside international crossover artists such as Diplo, Jahcoozi and Daniel Haaksman. Soon Zizek (named after the forward-thinking Slovenian Philosopher) became established as the most innovative and happening dance party in Buenos Aires and probably South America for that matter. With a loyal following they slowly started to build up their own artists on the Zizek Records imprint and touring the world with their homegrown artists and club night.
Still buzzing from their widely acclaimed gig at Roskilde Festival this summer, ZZK Records artists Douster and Fauna are stopping at WMF to smack Berlin accross the face with a dose of their highly contagious and tropical danceable music.

Tropical Fever !! bring it on!!

The symbol of the night is The Incredible Tree-Climbing Goat and we genuinely predict that some time through the night things will happen that will make The Incredible Tree-Climbing Goat pale in comparison. As usual, we have a unique mixture of musical styles and alcoholic beverages, famous artists and introvert geniuses, live performances and visual stimulation, super-interesting people and weirdos who are fun to be with. Several unexpected surprises are also to be revealed throughout the night.Bring yourselves and your friends and let’s all meet again and have fun together.
