Dense

We’re pretty sure that most of you have noticed: the new year has come and gone, Berlin’s freezing cold and the Club Transmediale is upon us. As every year, Dense will be there, presenting a selection of records from the store and taking care of providing your turntables and CD players with the beats you will just have heard at the festival. It’s all at WMF this year (as everybody will have heard by now) and starts tomorrow. Look for us on the second floor, in our secluded calm hideout.

Anyway, the store is still open, and we have quite some goodies to offer this time around.

First, yes, you’ve read right, the silver / chrome version of Throbbing Gristle‘s Buddha Machine (or “Gristlelism” for the friends) is in stock. Not for long, believe me.

Then, the dubstep aisle got punchy this weak, with the arrivals of new records by heavy hitters 16 Bit and Excision, as well a new Skream record on Loefah’s Swamp81 label.

Less bass, more guitars, but not any less heavy, check out the “Live V” double LP by Isis, released on Berlin’s “Viva Hate”, or share the madness again with Gang Gang Dance‘s “God’s Money” album, finally represse by The Social Registry.

First Dense newsletter for 2010, and starting the year with rather problematic news. Our computer has decided to play tricks on us (probably feeling let down that we never use it to play mp3, and jealous of our turntables), and has decided to dismember, disassemble and discard our customer order files. As a result, all of our specific orders have been lost. Therefore, if you have ordered something from us in the last couple of months, please get in touch. Your records might be waiting for you here, but we just don’t know anymore who ordered what. Yeaah for 2010.

All’s not so grim at the beginning of this new year, though, as we’ve got a lot of good beats, bits and blips for everybody.

The lion’s share goes to the breaks and dubstep section, with some jewels such as the new Millie & Andrea record (as usual pretty limited and sure to be gone pretty soon), Untold‘s new “Flexible” or three new records by Pinch, Joker and Distance on Tectonic. And I can’t but mention a CD which has brought a pretty wide consensus among us, the new Lone album on Werk Discs, “Ecstasy & Friends”.

A bit of product placement to close this newsletter: two of the labels closely affiliated with Dense have brought up some fresh sounds for this new year. Karaoke Kalk starts the decade with “Paper of Pins” by Wells, Schneider, Whitehead and Morgenstern, while Ad Noiseam’s alarm clock comes in the form of “The Words Below Limited Vinyl Edition vol. 3″ by DJ Hidden (the other two volumes and the album are of course still available).

Yes, unbelievable but true: one week after its unannounced resurection, the Dense newsletter is already back with a vengeance. How far will it go?

Before we beging: do not miss the show by The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble this very Thursday (Dec 10th) at Maria Am Ostbahnhof.
Not only is TKDE an amazing band released on Ad Noiseam (a label closely associated with Dense), playing their first gig ever in Berlin, but the supporting acts are Dense-favorite Lambent (who has also released on this other Dense-related label that is Stillavailable) and Oktopus of the ever impressive Dälek, but the whole thing is co-organized by your humble servants and the Club Transmediale. Add to this that entrance costs only 10 Euro and that the shows are quite early (be there before 10 PM at any rate), and you get something that nobody has the right to miss. Beware, we know who you are and will take retaliatory measures on those of you not attending.

Then, the new sounds for this week are a bit less electronic than usual. Let’s kick in with the new album by Curse Ov Dialect on Staubgold for some quality hip hop, and mention that we are also stocking a lot of releases by the Projet Mooncircle label, also in the hip hop aisle.
A lot less hip hop and a lot more evil, don’t pass on the live CD / LP / DVD by Wolves In The Throne Room (available in all formats), or the Kodiak and Nadja split LP on Denovali.
The rare amongst us who not only have ears but also eyes will enjoy the new issues of De:Bug and of the spanish luxury design magazine Belio, both of which are in stock now.

Finally, note that we’re making your Christmas shopping a bit easier this year, by re-stocking a lot of classics (such as a big chunk of the Warp backcatalog for very nice, friendly prices). Those of you who want things a bit rockier should enjoy the new Fuck Buttons album, “Tarot Sport”, Yo La Tengo‘s “Popular Songs” or a really nice DVD documenting Einstürzende Neubauten‘s first concert in the then not yet reunited East Berlin. After this, you might chill out with the long delayed but finally there vinyl version of Rafael Anton Irisarri‘s excellent “Daydreaming” album on Miasmah.

Finally, we’re feeling particularey generous lately and want to educate your ears a bit more. It’s no secret that the summer is a relatively calm period on the release front, which explains why this week’s Dense newslist manages to stay below the 100 items bar. And still, quite a few gemms arrived this week. Perfect timing therefore for all of you to come and check them out before September comes, with its avalanche of new material.

Where to start this time? With Animal Collective‘s “Summertime Clothes remixes”, as it fits this time of the year perfectly. Or maybe with something more rooted in german experimentalism, with “Durch die Wüste” from Roedelius (available on both CD and vinyl). And to keep things as challenging and high profile, how about the collaboration CD between Pan Sonic and Keiji Haino, Nurse With Wound’s new album, or Sub Rosa‘s new “Anthology of Noise & Electronic Music”?

If we want to keep things a bit more accessible and club-oriented, Planet Mu delivery some nice garage with Brackles‘s “LHC”, Stivs and Ed Cox unleash some well found jungle on Death$ucker, and 16 Bit stay 16 Bit, delivering some of the most interesting dubstep of the moment.
