Separated from the power giving source of nature and the wilderness, urban witches use the cityscape as a new primordial forest- a place filled with dangers but also a source of abundant sustenance if they live in harmony with the city and honor it. As a result, the latent power of the city is evoked and an Urban Witch is able to find power in simple man made objects as nature’s energy can be discovered in anything that was created. Urban Witches are in touch with the inherent synchronistic flow of the city which they can ride on just like the U Bahn if they keep their third eyes open. An Urban Witches basic mantra is “TUNE INTO SYNCHRONICITY AND THE CITY WILL ALWAYS PROVIDE.” Urban Witches therefore communicate with the guardians of the city- the Neon Divas and Electric Gods like streetlights and vending machines. Their temples are high rise buildings and dance clubs, they can recognize and interpret the modern signals of graffiti. Urban Witches not Bitches is a gathering of Urban Witches featuring the Altars of the Urban Witches: Rubbish Fairy (London), Legs Akimbo (Team Plastique, Berlin) and Lucy A.Roberts (Berlin). Made synchronistically from found and recycled objects, these Urban Witch altars present how women in the city can create an alternative world outside of the competitive bitch culture “girl power” presented by the mass media with groups like “The Pussycat Dolls”. Urban Witches not Bitches are also very unique- they do not follow a prescribed New Age or Wicca spirituality but instead find power by discovering and expressing their positive, strong and amazing individual natures. Urban Witches not Bitches invite Urban Peeps to visit their Urban Witch Altars in the hope that Urban Peeps can also reconnect with their inner minds and seek alternative astral planes.

TROPICALLL!!!!
With its African, indigenous Indian and colonial roots in Colombia, Cumbia music has suddenly been catapulted into a new era. In the same way that Kuduro, Kwaito, Baile funk, Reggaeton are intertwined with Dancehall, Hip Hop, Crunk, Dubstep and Techno, Cumbia is now also part of the endless list of genres that have surfaced as urban, electronic and world music are mashed together by the club kids of today.
DJs, producers, and bloggers worldwide who are united by the internet and an insatiable hunger for subculture, bass and uncharted musical territory have been embracing Cumbia and its sexy, bassy riddims.
Following in the footsteps of labels such as Diplo’s MadDecent or Man Recordings in Berlin, Zizek Records reflects a movement where the cross-cultural chaos is the motto and in fact a genre for itself!
The Argentina based label Zizek Records was born out of a regular club night in Buenos Aires called Club Zizek, where local djs have played alongside international crossover artists such as Diplo, Jahcoozi and Daniel Haaksman. Soon Zizek (named after the forward-thinking Slovenian Philosopher) became established as the most innovative and happening dance party in Buenos Aires and probably South America for that matter. With a loyal following they slowly started to build up their own artists on the Zizek Records imprint and touring the world with their homegrown artists and club night.
Still buzzing from their widely acclaimed gig at Roskilde Festival this summer, ZZK Records artists Douster and Fauna are stopping at WMF to smack Berlin accross the face with a dose of their highly contagious and tropical danceable music.

Tropical Fever !! bring it on!!

Summertime beats remixes

August 1st, 2009

newsletter010809It’s no secret that the summer is a relatively calm period on the release front, which explains why this week’s Dense newslist manages to stay below the 100 items bar. And still, quite a few gemms arrived this week. Perfect timing therefore for all of you to come and check them out before September comes, with its avalanche of new material.

Where to start this time? With Animal Collective’s “Summertime Clothes remixes”, as it fits this time of the year perfectly. Or maybe with something more rooted in german experimentalism, with “Durch die Wüste” from Roedelius (available on both CD and vinyl). And to keep things as challenging and high profile, how about the collaboration CD between Pan Sonic and Keiji Haino, Nurse With Wound’s new album, or Sub Rosa’s new “Anthology of Noise & Electronic Music”?

If we want to keep things a bit more accessible and club-oriented, Planet Mu delivery some nice garage with Brackles’s “LHC”, Stivs and Ed Cox unleash some well found jungle on Death$ucker, and 16 Bit stay 16 Bit, delivering some of the most interesting dubstep of the moment.

Here’s the list. Enjoy the summer, and keep on densing:
