newsletter310509
We survived the various parties and concerts in which we were taking part last week (see our latest newsletter for more details), and are now ready with a list of new records, CDs and books which arrived last week at Dense.

It was expected a few weeks ago and got delayed several times, but the Moderat album is finally here, and you can get this long-awaited collaboration between Apparat and Modeselektor on various formats at the store (LP, CD and CD+DVD). Two Berlin acts on a Berlin label at a Berlin indie-store: it can’t get any more local.
Other noticeable albums of the week include the accurately titled “Shout At The Döner” CD and double LP by Kid606, “An Imaginary Country” by Tim Hecker on Kranky (also on CD and LP), and The Field’s “Yesterday And Today” on Kompakt.

You might also not want to pass on Ghislain Poirier’s new EP on Ninja Tune, and the ones of you with the longest hair will mosh and invoke the devil to ’s “Malevolent Grain” 12″ on Souther Lord.

Here’s the list. Have fun and remember to stop by Dense for some fresh sounds and recommendations.

May 28th, 2009

recommends280509with parts of the crew finishing up their diplomas, being scattered around Germany on festivals or maintaining some of the best labels in the world, we are so busy this weekend that we can’t deliver you a full on newsletter this week. But here’s still some thing not to miss

First of all, the club of our hearts, the Zentrale Randlage, celebrates post-mortem its 5th Birthday this Friday. Since we can’t miss this party, our very own DJ Marius Reisser will spin some of his dopest records for you.

Also Littlebig and Tigerbeat6 / Tigerbass teamed up to bring you a sick line-up to celebrate the release of the newest Tigerbass LP: “Shout at the Döner”. Since we can’t miss this, too, we will be attending the party with a small selection of our goods, so if you haven’t had the chance for visiting us in the last weeks, you can stock on vinyl while clubbing.

Finally, Berlin’s Zhark label is celebrating their 13th birthday, and going at it with a dark and raw bang at Raum 18, also on Friday.

Another birthday, but this time not this Friday: the weekly Killekill parties are celebrating their first year at their usual Berghain Kantine location next Wednesday.

Finally, if the weather stays nice for a bit, you might enjoy two early parties at the “Terasse”, a.k.a. the open air “beach” parties right next to Maria am Ostbahnhof, on Saturday and Wednesday.

So yeah, enjoy this parties, grab some tasty food at the Karneval der Kulturen and don’t forget: Dense loves YOU!

Nicolas Dense Recommends, Newsletter

Dense recommends: 22.05. – 28.05.

May 23rd, 2009

After a rather quiet week, a rather exciting one awaits us.

On Saturday you have to choose… Do you want to get destroyed by killer basslines (then you’ll go to Raum18, to see Jamie Vex’d and Onra play) or do you want to get your eardrums wasted by hyphy leadsynths (then you head over to the Dry Guillotine at Maria)? If none of this wakens your interest, visit the Kesselhaus instead and enjoy some Beirut’esque Klezmer-Balkan-Gypsy fusion instead.
You might have already heard it, but Sunn o))) finally return to our quiet little town once again. Even though we heard that the concert is already sold out, we have to mention it. But we also heard that if you just grab yourself a beer and sit down at the Prater Biergarten you’ll have a pretty good chance to listen to the concert anyway… On Monday Jimi Tenor and Kabu Kabu will impress us with some afro-jazz. So if you were looking for an opportunity to wear your Sun-Ra inspired Osiris costume, that might be the chance for it. But he isn’t the only legend in town this week, because on Tuesday Jarboe will enter the stage at Café Zapata (in company of some grim doom metal bands, though). Thursday offers us three small but interesting events. First of all we have the bi-weekly Dubstep Standards party at Edelweiss (this time with our dear friends the Society Suckers and their chiptune-dubstep outfit Karlmarxstadt). Then there will be a concert with Jozef van Wissem, the dutch maestro of electro-acoustic lute. He isn’t as famous as Sir Richard Bishop or James Blackshaw, but  a great and fascinating musician nonetheless. Finally there will be a butoh dance performance at the LUX in Kreuzberg. Goose-bumps guaranteed.
The last recommendation we have for you is a new music site called “The V Sessions”. They want to improve your onlince concert experience and premier on coming Thursday with a live performance by Christian Fennesz. The show will cost 5 € and offer multiple camera angles. We don’t know if their concept will work out, but we wish them the best.

Plenty of new stuff came in last week, so come and visit us!

Yours truly,
Your Dense.

A HAWK AND A HACKSAW

http://www.myspace.com/ahawkandahacksaw

Wer wissen will, wie die Fusion von Balkan-Swing, amerikanischem Folk, Klezmer und türkischer Musik klingt, der wird bei A Hawk And A Hacksaw fündig. “First-class Folk” sagt The Guardian und The Times jubelt: “Leaves you wishing more Rock Bands would show such adventure!” (amazon) Für ihre Tour haben sich A Hawk & A Hacksaw jetzt personell verstärkt und werden als 6- oder 7-köpfige Band zu sehen sein.

JIMI TENOR & KABU KABU

“The set-up is so dazzling, the sound so sweeping, that at first the show just rolls over you, especially ‘Out of Nowhere’. There’s involvement, too, in the shifting interplay of orchestra, sitar, guitars, vocals and the funky interjections of Jimi’s key boards and sax.” -the Observer “The eight musicians, wearing spangled cloaks and floral garlands, are deceptively good: tight where the music demands it, but equally able to turn in a bit of hooligan jazz, with blaring trumpet and trombone solos, to complement Tenor’s more wayward tendencies… Tenor sits behind a Fender Rhodes suitcase piano, his flute propped against a piercingly amplified Moog, which he plays with his forehead during Tsunami… Only a few people attempt to dance to Tsunami’s monster riff, but everyone loves it anyway. Tenor’s best songs, such as Strawberry Place, Miracles and Beyond the Stars, the title track of his latest album, have maddeningly catchy hooks. And he can do a lot with one note, as the stomping encore of his hit Sugardaddy proves.” -the Guardian “Silly clothes can’t disguise huge talent, writes Evening Standard on Sep 16 in it’s review of Jimi’s gig at London’s Jazz Cafe. According to the review, Jimi is a remarkable multi-instrumentalist who can write and orchestrate brilliantly. “The performance was full of movement and visual interest… though he and his eight-piece band were again decked in bizarre outfits, the music drove relentlessly hard. Three Nigerian newcomers, a kit-drummer and two hand-drum percussionists, explained this surge of energy, but Jimi’s Fender-bassist and guitarist didn’t spare themselves either. His two-man brass section of trumpet and trombone riffed with taut accuracy and soloed with exuberant power, but as always Jimi was continuously the centre of attention.” -the Evening Standard

Jozef van Wissem (NL)
www.myspace.com/vanwissem

+ Support: Steve Gunn/Heidi Diehl (of Vanishing Voice) (US)

+ “Blue” Derek Jarman (UK/1993)

Christian Fennesz – Live Solo Show

Fennesz cruises along through many different worlds, and he can’t see how that would be a problem. After starting out, guitar in hand, as a member of a rock band inspired by Sonic Youth, the 90’s see him turning to electronic music and acoustic research. He works alone but keeps his eager mind entertained through fruitful collaborations (Le Groupe de Recherches Musicales, Keith Rowe, Ryuichi Sakamoto…). The 2000’s offer him the chance to show what he’s made of: his studio album Endless Summer quickly attains cult status, the Live in Japan recording is voted one the year’s best albums by The Wire, and the latest offering, Black Sea (2008), looks like it’s on track to perform similarly.

Variousing In The Sun

May 19th, 2009

 newsletter190509

Ah, Berlin: the sun, the heat, and the Dense newsletter are all coming back today. One has to love the sweet smell of sweaty wax.

We usually kick off these newsletter by recommending some full lengths, but this week is one for singles. Mandatory inclusion on everybody’s shopping list right now is the Flying Lotus and Joker split 12″ on Tectonic, as well as no less than three new 12″ on Planet Mu (quite electronica with Ital Tek, all wobbly dubstep with the newcommer Gemmy, and a surefire high production with Pinch). You also don’t want to pass on the new EP by 2econd Class Citizen, “One By One”, out on the Berlin based label Equinox,.

Our love this week went however not only to one release, but to a whole band, with the arrival of three new releases by the great Various Production (“As It Stops Raining” and “Buds” on Fire Records, and the self released “Tricycle”). We recommended to you ther first, then their second album, and pretty much everything in between, so I guess it’s time for the whole Dense team to, again, state how much we all enjoy this act’s music.

Finally, our good friend at Belio magazine are celebrating their tenth birthday, and we just got the new issue of this design magazine, which has considerably gained in size and thickness. Check it out.

Happy sweating and happy Densing, here’s this week’s list:

NGOMA

live:
TIMEBLIND [Soot/Version]
DJ ZHAO [Ngoma]
DEE-VD & CHEMO [Ngoma/Dirty Canvas]
DJ JANECK [La Bolschevita/Wiesbaden]
DJ KUSTO [La Regla]

Ngoma returns at a brand new Berlin venue, Raum 18, on Saturday 16th May with a booty-shaking line up. Headliner Timeblind is a sonic scientist from New York, currently living in Berlin. He has released on DJ /Rupture’s Soot Records, Orthlorng Musork and the mighty Tigerbeat6/Shockout label as well as prime 90s techno labels such as Probe, Missile, Synewave and Communique. Ngoma founder and resident DJ Zhao has been active as dj and sound curator since 2001, Zhao organized critically acclaimed long running sound-art series TONE_; founded and performed regularly at techno club PULSE”; and has opened up for groups such as Pan Sonic. DJ Janeck explores the similarity between Latin American music and the sounds of Eastern Europe, the Colombian cumbia with their clarinets and accordions or Cuban charanga with their violins and flutes to his Jewish Roots. DJ Bongo was born in Cuba, and his trumpet work has seen him sharing the stage with the likes of Lauren Hill ,Zap Mama, Dave Brubeck, los Van Van, Raul Paz, Sargento Garcia, Jimi Tenor, Max Herre, Morgan Heritage, Sly & Robbie, Jean Paul and Buju Banton. Without falling victim to the clichés of globalisation, DJ Bongo describes his style as “Electrolatin freestyle” or in other words: “ a corner where everything is possible”. DJ Bongo is a LaRegla resident as is DJ Kusto whose Afro-latin and tropical beats regularly rock the foundations of this venue in GörlitzerPark. DeeVD has been djing in the UK for 15 years and founded London’s ground-breaking Dirty Canvas night (grime and dubstep) and runs the No Hats No Hood label. He moved to Berlin in 2008 to join forces with Zhao on Ngoma. His DJ partner is sonic scientist Chemo, from Leeds but has been djing and producing in Berlin for three years.

With that kind of line-up you know that Ngoma represents the positive side of globalization. Bass culture and musical heritage fuse; ultra-modern riddims meet the wealth of local flavors; irresistable next-level urban dance music arise on every continent. Tanzania, India, Cuba, Egypt, South Africa, just a few destinations where wild styles are born, crucial new scenes thrive – places out of reach to most – NGOMA ambassadors of boom bring the heat from party hotspots across the known world – the wickedest beats and sweetest flows. Forget post modernism, NGOMA is the crazy sound of NOW.

Katherine Newbegin – Behind The Scenes

Behind the Scenes is the result of this question of the history of the places, and its title describes an aspect of the artist’s work. Born in Portland, Oregon, in 1976 Katherine Newbegin majored in photography and English Literature at Hunter College in New York as well as at Yale University. Newbegin was assistant to the German artist Candida Höfer, whose photographs of interiors differ greatly from Newbegin’s. Katherine Newbegin has been travelling throughout Eastern Europe since 2005, and has also traveled in communist Cuba and US states such as Oregon. The American artist depicts the outside world, a world dominated by the past, a world which people use and discard, and which reflects human fallibility in its rooms. A worn-out, lifeless world is presented, whose attributes are isolation, shabbiness, neglect, and emotional emptiness. Newbegin is interested in what is behind the façade. She has to overcome locked doors for her research and often has to sneak into buildings like a thief. Nothing is arranged in her works, nothing is specifically illuminated or staged. Persistently, she circles the object of desire until that one perfect moment has arrived for her to take her photograph. The artist searches for traces. With a large backpack and her camera equipment in tow, the young woman goes on a search for isolated places to track down visual clues which are easily overlooked in this fast paced world. Through her lens she discovers a world long forgotten by today’s consumer. Newbegin chooses locations that have inherited their looks from politics, as it were. Soviet architecture of the 1960s, whose monumental concrete constructions were shaped by the need to prove presence and modernity, is one of the artist’s targets. Melancholy descends on the viewers of Katherine Newbegin’s color photographs. Emotionally empty rooms, hotel rooms, floors, staircases and bathrooms testify to a harshness, a type of reality which is usually hidden or quickly suppressed. In her work, Newbegin investigates these stories and this momentum, thus also analyzing universal conditions for being sheltered or unsheltered. Katherine Newbegin explains her choice as follows: “… set against the western idea of an affluent middle-class family driving to Disneyland, it is this stark contrast which acts as the crux of my fascination with these hotels. One of the most compelling aspects of the vacations offered to the ‘best workers’ of the Soviet regime was the element of control and monitoring which took place during the trips.”

Exhibition running until 2.7., Tuesday to Friday from 2 pm to 7 pm, Saturdays 11 am to 8 pm.
